We are now beginning our second quarter of school! It seems like just yesterday that students were filing into school for the first day, and now we are about ready to transform much of the campus for Harvest Festival! (If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, hurry up so you don’t miss out). This year's Harvest Festival is on October 30th from 5-9 PM. I hope to see you there.
In my last newsletter, one of the things I wrote about was how parents can help encourage their student in their education. I would like to expand on that a little bit and hopefully give some practical suggestions as well.
I believe that one of the reasons that we see our students doing well educationally is due to parental involvement. Let’s face it, you have a vested interest in their education, and want to see them do their best. It is interesting to watch and talk with the lower elementary parents. For the most part, they are very involved in the educational process of their child. They are making sure that books are read, tests are studied for, homework is done (and understood). As kids get older, that should not change. Your involvement with your child’s education in first grade should not die out when they get to sixth grade or twelfth grade! Parents need to stay involved!
So, what are some practical ways to do that? Let me give a few thoughts. First, stay on top of the homework and tests. Ask your students what they have for homework, if they have it done, and if there are any test to study for. Make sure that you give them time and a quiet space to work on their school work. Second, communicate with their teachers. Remember that the teachers want to see your student succeed, and they are there to help your student. Finally, utilize Edline! You can stay informed of homework and grades by looking on Edline. If you are not familiar with this wonderful web-based tool that we use, please call the school office so that we can get you set up!
I look forward to seeing what God will do in our school the rest of this year, and I also look forward to seeing what God has for your student! It is my prayer that we will see growth in every student this year - both educationally and spiritually!

Touch A Life: Touch A Soul
Sixty-eight years ago, a reverend by the name of Fred Jordan founded a mission on Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. His goal was to serve the homeless, as well as those in need of hope. To this man, these people were more than "Skid Row," they were his fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Through Fred and his loving family, the goal would be reached and thousands of lives touched.
Today, the Reverend's son, Willie Jordan, runs the mission with his family. For the past twenty-one years, the Fred Jordan Mission has produced "The Back-to-School Giveaway" for children in need. Since its first year, the mission has served over one hundred thousand children living in poor conditions with food, school supplies, and clothing.
This year, I had the privilege to interview Mr. Jordan, and he couldn't stress to me enough the importance he found in his volunteers. He especially found the contribution of "his friends from Apple Valley Christian" to be significant and was ecstatic to to see us serving another year. He then began explaining that despite the current state of the economy , a team of approximately five hundred people come and help every year.
The volunteers this year were not just serving; they were making a difference. Children of all ages were receiving shoes, clothes, a good meal, and a complimentary haircut. The products and services given away were compliments of "The Back-to-School Giveaway" participants such as Foot Locker, In N Out, and Paul Mitchell's hair stylists from Citrus College.
From about 9:30 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon, our school, as well as the many other volunteers did various jobs contributing to the event. Not only were there fantastic dumpster dives, as well as security duty and children walk-throughs (taking a small child from the line through the lines of give-aways) for everyone to participate in, there were also jobs which can't be written about because they were far too disgusting. Serving others isn't always easy and by no means clean, but knowing you've done something good for another person is what makes the event such a success for all involved. It is an eye opener, and it serves as a sign to all of us to not take the blessings we have taken for granted. In the words of Willie Jordan, "The direction our country is going right now is by no means good, and to make sure I can make a difference, I'm going to do this 'til God returns."

Elementary Corner October
Healthy Tip:
Just a reminder to parents to speak to your child about making sure they wash their hands at school. Students should wash their hands after recess, before eating their food, and after using the restroom. Each of our elementary classes has antibacterial wipes, and teachers encourage students to wash their hands and cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. We ask that parents reinforce these healthy habits at home.
AR – Home Connect:
We wanted to remind our elementary parents that you are able to connect to your child’s Accelerated Reading Account. This will enable you to check on, review, and monitor your child’s reading progress. You can view the Home Connect from any computer with internet. To log into Renaissance Home Connect Website: https://Hosted5.renlearn.com/271281/HomeConnect/Login.aspx
The user name and password is the same one your child uses at school. You can also: Click Email Setup to sign up to receive emails showing your student’s quizzes or test results.

FUNdraising Events
I want to begin by thanking all the people who have been donating so much of their time to helping make each of our fundraising events so successful. These events are only possible because of all of you who are able to volunteer. My sincerest thanks goes out to Jason and Julie Myskow, Rosebud Rodriguez, Adrienne Gillespie, Alana Combs, Lyn Kern, Caroline Fisher, Amy Murphy, Cherie Cassey, Elaine and Tim Vandenberg, Jaymie Walker, Laura Smith, Melissa Brinkley, Dawn Lyon, Sherrie Whitmire, Cheri Caplinger, Becky and Mark Solorio, Jen and Pam Woods, Elizabeth Noonan, Stephanie Ricker, Chris Ackerman, Sharon and Lowell Smith, and all the teachers and staff. I know there is probably someone I forgot to mention, and I apologize ahead of time. Thank you; thank you all!! Our upcoming events for November are the See’s Candy Sale (November 16th) and our Book Fair at Barnes and Noble (November 19th).
We are also still continuing to collect Box Tops and have just given fun sheets to the elementary students to fill up. Each Box Top gives $ .10 to our school. Please let others know that we are collecting Box Tops so that they can join in the fun too!
