Harvest Festival
The dunk tank came back strong this year and is a huge success at this year’s Harvest Festival. It is easy to see what is so exhilarating about knocking people into the tub, but what about the brave souls who volunteered to be violently thrown into a vat of water on a blustery October night? We grabbed a few of these daredevils and grilled them on the ins and outs of this seemingly deranged experience.
So, what persuaded you to do this in the first place?
Pastor Nate Garn (NG): “Logan Brinkley yelled at me and said, ‘You will be doing this!’ So I really had no other choice.”
Senior Bryce Ely (BE): “I was just asked the day of, so it was a spur of the moment decision.”
Tell us, was the water as cold as it looked?
NG: “No, it wasn’t, it was actually kind of warm after awhile. But at first it was cold….man, I hated that thing."
BE: “It wasn’t bad at all, I had a wetsuit on so I was pretty warm."
What kind of things would you say to persuade people to knock you down?
NG: “I said, ‘You throw like a girl!’ and ‘I’m not even scared because I KNOW you won’t be able to hit it!’ I even told some kids they could move up if they wanted; I didn’t care because I was so confidant they wouldn’t be able to hit it"
BE: “I said things like ‘I’ve seen better arms on a chair!’ and ‘Prove you’re a man and knock me down!.” I also would call people out like, ‘Hey you in the blue, I know you can’t knock me down!’"
How many times would you estimate that you were dunked?
NG: “Maybe thirty, it was crazy. It was like every other throw I was getting dunked. I think one kid spent like twenty bucks on me!”
BE: “I would estimate twenty-two times, exactly.”
What was going through your mind when the kids were getting ready to throw the ball? NG: “I was thinking about how much I didn’t want to hurt my pinky toe again. I got knocked down on one of the first tries, and I jammed it, and it was hurting the whole time. That thing hurt bad, and that’s coming from a true manly man. “
BE: “Don’t hit the target!”
All that being said, would you ever do it again?
NG: “ Umm…..No. (laughs), But yeah I think I would.”
BE: “Yeah, it’s really fun, as long as I have my wetsuit on!”

The first is “Blessing," it is a blessing to be a part of AVCS. I am totally blessed to be able to work with the students and staff. It is no secret to anyone that we are in the midst of a challenging economy, and this has had an impact on our budget. In the midst of all of this the staff has been amazing, realizing that they truly are serving the Lord, and it is a blessing to do so. This brings me to my second word, “Provision”. Without a doubt, we have seen God provide faithfully throughout this year. At the present time we are still short of our budgeted number of students, and yet God has been providing. We know full well that the school, as well as the church, is the Lord’s and we are called to be faithful stewards!
As we are in the midst of this holiday season, I encourage you to take time and reflect on how God has blessed you and your family and how he has provided for you this past year. I also encourage you to reflect on how AVCS has been a blessing to your family and in what ways our school has provided for you.
I look forward to many more years of blessing and provision!

A Message from Pastor John
In my last newsletter, one of the things I wrote about was how parents can help encourage their student in their education. I would like to expand on that a little bit and hopefully give some practical suggestions as well.
I believe that one of the reasons that we see our students doing well educationally is due to parental involvement. Let’s face it, you have a vested interest in their education, and want to see them do their best. It is interesting to watch and talk with the lower elementary parents. For the most part, they are very involved in the educational process of their child. They are making sure that books are read, tests are studied for, homework is done (and understood). As kids get older, that should not change. Your involvement with your child’s education in first grade should not die out when they get to sixth grade or twelfth grade! Parents need to stay involved!
So, what are some practical ways to do that? Let me give a few thoughts. First, stay on top of the homework and tests. Ask your students what they have for homework, if they have it done, and if there are any test to study for. Make sure that you give them time and a quiet space to work on their school work. Second, communicate with their teachers. Remember that the teachers want to see your student succeed, and they are there to help your student. Finally, utilize Edline! You can stay informed of homework and grades by looking on Edline. If you are not familiar with this wonderful web-based tool that we use, please call the school office so that we can get you set up!
I look forward to seeing what God will do in our school the rest of this year, and I also look forward to seeing what God has for your student! It is my prayer that we will see growth in every student this year - both educationally and spiritually!

Touch A Life: Touch A Soul
Today, the Reverend's son, Willie Jordan, runs the mission with his family. For the past twenty-one years, the Fred Jordan Mission has produced "The Back-to-School Giveaway" for children in need. Since its first year, the mission has served over one hundred thousand children living in poor conditions with food, school supplies, and clothing.
This year, I had the privilege to interview Mr. Jordan, and he couldn't stress to me enough the importance he found in his volunteers. He especially found the contribution of "his friends from Apple Valley Christian" to be significant and was ecstatic to to see us serving another year. He then began explaining that despite the current state of the economy , a team of approximately five hundred people come and help every year.
The volunteers this year were not just serving; they were making a difference. Children of all ages were receiving shoes, clothes, a good meal, and a complimentary haircut. The products and services given away were compliments of "The Back-to-School Giveaway" participants such as Foot Locker, In N Out, and Paul Mitchell's hair stylists from Citrus College.
From about 9:30 in the morning till 4 in the afternoon, our school, as well as the many other volunteers did various jobs contributing to the event. Not only were there fantastic dumpster dives, as well as security duty and children walk-throughs (taking a small child from the line through the lines of give-aways) for everyone to participate in, there were also jobs which can't be written about because they were far too disgusting. Serving others isn't always easy and by no means clean, but knowing you've done something good for another person is what makes the event such a success for all involved. It is an eye opener, and it serves as a sign to all of us to not take the blessings we have taken for granted. In the words of Willie Jordan, "The direction our country is going right now is by no means good, and to make sure I can make a difference, I'm going to do this 'til God returns."

Just a reminder to parents to speak to your child about making sure they wash their hands at school. Students should wash their hands after recess, before eating their food, and after using the restroom. Each of our elementary classes has antibacterial wipes, and teachers encourage students to wash their hands and cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. We ask that parents reinforce these healthy habits at home.

The "Big" Kids
After escorting our three interviewees out of the last class of the day, the first thing our reporter noticed about these students was the sheer amount of energy that they had. It shined through in every question they answered. When the reporter asked about how they enjoyed middle school so far, they responded with a wide variety of answers both good and bad. They discussed the shock of having lockers, the excitement of high school chapel, and the wonder of the amazing creatures that wander the campus- seniors. When asked about how middle school differed from elementary, Zach Richart replied, “Teachers expect a lot more of you. You’re given a lot more responsibility and stuff.”
This response allowed these students to come to a realization that not only did their environment change, but that they had changed as well. “The girls and guys just act differently,” stated Logan.
On the outside, they seemed like the same young carefree students that they had been a year ago, but they were beginning to see that there was something different within themselves and their fellow classmates. They had grown; they had matured. They had become middle schoolers.

Pastor John's Letter-September
As I have been reflecting on the beginning of this school year, there are a couple of thoughts that come to mind that I wanted to share with you this month. I believe that as we remember and reflect on these ideas it will help up to have a truly great year!
The first thing I think of is that we are so blessed. We are blessed with great students, parents, teachers, and staff! As we remember this, it is important to remember that it is God who is blessing us. We know from James 1:17 that “every good and perfect gift is from above,” and I believe it is important that we give God the glory for what He is doing in our midst. I am so thankful for each student, parent and staff member God has brought to AVC.
I am also dwelling on the fact that the school year is much like a long race. Over the Labor Day weekend, I “ran” in the Disneyland half marathon. I know that there are some of you that run 13.1 miles on a regular basis; all I have to say is that there is counseling available! As I participated in that event, I thought about our school and the start of this year. The biggest thing I thought of is how you have to give it your all even though it’s not always fun! Parents, you can be a big help in this. Be your student’s cheerleader, motivator, and encourager! I truly believe that, for the most part, the students want to do their best, but they also need a little encouragement (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am to be involved with AVCS, it truly is a blessing and a privilege. It’s been a great start; I can’t wait to see what God has in store for us for the rest of the year!

September Elementary Corner
Homework Study Habits:
Elementary teachers assign homework for their students in order that they may:
*Improve skills they have already learned and need to review
*Complete assigned work or projects
*Learn to work independently
*Become motivated to read and improve comprehension
*Study to prepare for tests
In the upper elementary grades, studying for tests is a big part of homework. Teachers do not assign “busy work.” Your child will need to review, study, and memorize their notes and pages for upcoming tests. Understanding your child and how they learn best will help in assisting them with their study habits. Some learning styles include hearing it over and over, or singing (auditory), writing it out again, seeing it written down, making charts or pictures (visual), or having interaction, discussion, or learning it through movement or hand motions, (kinesthetic).
Progress Reports:
We are now halfway through the 1st Quarter. Please be sure to check Edline to find out your child’s grades. If you have any questions about grades or assignments, please speak to your child’s teacher. All of our teachers can be reached through e-mail by using their first initial and their last name @avcschool.com. (For example: jrodgers@avcschool.com)
Charms:
The elementary classes will be continuing the charm incentive program. Students are able to earn charms for excellent behavior, academics, AR, and physical fitness. We hope to increase motivation and provide incentives for our students. Our desire is to have students discover that scholatic, character, and physical activities are fun and rewarding.
GOAL Awards
Our first GOAL Awards will be given out during Elementary Chapel on Wednesday, October 7th at 2:00pm. Also, the fourth grade class will be presenting the Chapel program for that day. Please join us!
High School News
NEWS FOR SECONDARY STUDENTS AND PARENTS
We are at the mid-quarter; please be sure to check edline for your student’s progress. (Anyone still needing an edline login can email Mr. Lockwood for an activation code at rlockwood@avcschool.com)
Report cards will be mailed home after the fall break
ALL 9TH-11TH GRADE STUDENTS:
The PSAT tests will be on the Wednesday we come back from our fall break: October 14th from 8:00 – 10:50 am. Please be sure that your student has had a good breakfast and a good night’s sleep. They will also need to have a calculator of their own for the test as well as two to three #2 pencils.
SENIOR PARENTS
If your student is planning to take the College Entrance SATs another time the best test dates would be in October and November. Please go to collegeboard.com to register.
November 1-November 30th is the "preferred" deadline for all UC applications for Seniors interested in attending a UC school in the fall. This is also the ‘preferred’ application time for the Cal State colleges as well. Applications may be done online.
Parents of Seniors will want to plan to have their taxes done early this year if at all possible for the filing of the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), which will have to be completed by March 2nd, 2010. On this form you can estimate your tax information if need be, but it is a smoother process if you have them done. Watch for more information as the time approaches!
Senior parents ,please be sure to check with your seniors about due dates. The picture frames for graduation should have already been paid for and picked up from the office. These are due back before we leave on Christmas Break (December 18). If you have not paid Mrs. Patag the $57.00 fee for your brick, frame, and graduation picture please do so ASAP.
Don't forget October 16th is your due date for the pictures and parent letter to use on for your student's yearbook tribute page- please contact Miss Evans at cevans@avcschool.com if you have not already done so.
AVC Choir News
It would be great for many more people in the high desert to hear our AVC choirs and our high school vocal ensemble, Brioso! Christmas is just around the corner, and we would love to sing or carol for businesses, schools, churches, Christmas parties, and/or celebrations! We are eagerly preparing to perform excellent choral music for entertainment and ministry opportunities throughout the year! If you know of opportunities to showcase our choirs and bring glory to God through this avenue, please contact Brenda McLaughlin at AVC.

Q and A with the Latin Teacher
Mrs. Wanis learned to speak Latin from her aunt, Jill Watson, and yes, she’s in relation to Mr. Watson. In fact, Mrs. Wanis is Mr. Watson’s daughter. Mrs. Wanis said,
“It was good growing up in that Watson household; I’m a lot like my dad in the case that I love discussion and to talk about different things. I preferred to be with my family. They’re a lot of fun.”
Mrs. Wanis thinks that Latin can be easier to learn just because it’s more regular than English. With English, you have so many different forms of one word. With Latin, if there’s one rule, it always abides by that rule, but it can also be a little more difficult because there’s a lot more memorization.
Although Mrs. Wanis speaks Latin very well and is able to translate, she doesn’t consider herself to be fluent, because Latin isn’t a spoken language. She doesn’t know everything there is to know about it, but living in Egypt and being around the African and Arabic languages have enabled her to have a good ear and sound when learning language.
Mrs. Wanis said,"It (Latin) honestly benefits you when you’re trying to learn a new language.”
Mrs. Wanis said,”I’m excited that we started a Latin program here because it’ll help students with other subjects. It’s wonderful to learn, and we haven’t had a Latin program here for a long time.”
’m sure I speak for all of AVC when I say we’re more than happy Mrs. Wanis is here and we can’t wait to see how the year goes for her.

HS SLT
We are pleased to present an all-new service project: a jacket drive, beginning September 21st. We encourage students of all grades as well as staff and parents to raid their closets for gently used sweaters and jackets that will be donated to people in need around the High Desert. This will be a great way to give back to the community and give those in need a warm jacket just in time for winter.
On October 30th, we will be hosting our annual Harvest Festival complete with games, food, bounce house, prizes, and of course lots of candy. Everyone is invited to partake in this trick-or-treat alternative in a safe environment. Dressing up is also encouraged but no scary costumes, please! We hope to see you there.
The year is sure to be filled with wonderful events for the students to partake in, and we can’t wait for everyone to see what’s in store! Keep your eyes out for SLT events throughout the school year. We look forward to a great year.
New Discipline Policies
Parents and students, please read the dress code guidelines. If you do not have a copy of the dress code let the office know and we will be happy to give you one.
Just a few reminders:
· Girls, please make sure your skirts/dresses/shorts are to the knee; even with leggings, your shirts/skirts/dresses must be to the knee.
· You may wear professional dress slacks on chapel days. NO cords or colored jean type pants are allowed.
· Boys, please make sure you wear professional dress pants on chapel days. NO cords or colored jean type pants are allowed. Also, remember if you wear a shirt with a shirt-tail, it will need to be tucked in. Shirts that are straight cut at the bottom may be left untucked.
On chapel days we want to see our students in professional wear. Thank you for helping us prepare our students as they go into the work force and learn how to dress professionally.
If your student is out of dress code and you are unable to bring them a change of clothes, they will be required to change into PE clothes that are provided. Please wash and return them the next day. Thank you for your support as we encourage our students to have modest and appropriate dress. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Wells or Pastor Richart at AVCS.
TARDY POLICY
There have been a few changes in our tardy policy. Please note, if your student is tardy, we will give excused or unexcused tardies for record keeping only. However, once a student has reached 5 tardies (previously 3), regardless of excused or unexcused, they will serve a lunch detention. We realize there are times when your child has an appointment and will be late, but when they are late for whatever reason it is still disruptive to the class learning environment. Our tardy policy will be fully explained in our parent/student handbook, which will be available in the office soon. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Wells or Pastor Richart at AVCS.
Thank you for your support as we teach our students the value of being on time.
CELL PHONE POLICY
We do not allow cell phone use in the classrooms. Your students may use their cell phones at break and lunch as well as between classes. During class, we ask that they keep their phone on top of their desk at all times. Cell phone discipline procedure as follows:
1st Offense-their phone will be taken and turned into the office, and they lose phone privileges for four days. They must turn in their phone every morning and may pick up every afternoon.
2nd Offense-Parent must pick up their student's cell phone from the office.
3rd Offense-In-house suspension
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Wells or Pastor Richart at AVCS.

Discipline Coordinator
Concert on campus
In addition to all these exciting features, live bands filled the evening with music. With songs from Southern Spirit and The Working Poets keeping everyone's foot tapping, there was not a dull moment throughout the day. Finally, snow cones, popcorn, and of course Pita Stop made sure no one went hungry. A special thanks goes out to all the people that made this exciting day so memorable.

From Pastor John
Welcome back!!! I trust you had a great, relaxing summer filled with fun memories for your family. I know that for me personally, the summer was great, but I am thrilled that all of the students are back on campus. As of this writing, we have just completed our first week of school, and it has been a very good week. I would like to thank all of the teachers, students, parents and staff for your part in that.
If you have been around AVCS, you will notice some changes in our staffing and even in the way we do some things. I am excited about these changes and believe that they will continue to strengthen our school. This year we have four new teachers that you will hear more about in coming newsletters. They are: Rebecca Rodgers – P.E., Kirstin Vlodica – Spanish, Tyler Vlodica – Math & Science, and Julie Wanis – Latin. Chances are your student has at least one of these new teachers.
As we begin a new school year, I would like to present you with a challenge – challenge your student. You can be assured that their teachers will do their best to challenge them, but as a parent you know your child best and what it is that they are capable of doing. Encourage them to do their best in everything they do. Colossians 3:17 tells us, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Our motto at Apple Valley Christian is, “Training Christian leaders committed to excellence”, and we consider it an honor to work with your student toward that goal. I believe that true excellence takes place as we do things for Christ and His glory (Colossians 3:23). With that in mind, it is my prayer that we would have an excellent year!
All for His Glory!
John Richart

We also have numerous on-going FUNd raisers, including the Shop with Scrip program, Greencycling, Good Search, Good Shop, and a recycling program here at the school. Shop with Scrip is simply buying Gift Cards through the Scrip program to places you shop anyway, such as groceries, fuel, restaurants, etc., and they donate a percentage of those sales back to the school. Greencycling is an on-line shopping site, http://www.greencycling.com/ (you must designate AVCS as the beneficiary), where you can buy recycled gift wrap, steel water bottles, steel snack containers, reusable bags, reusable sandwich wrap mats, backpacks, and much more. Every time you shop, Greencycling donates 25% of the sale back to the school. Good Search is an on-line search engine, just designate AVCS as the beneficiary, and every time you do an on-line search one cent is donated to the school. It doesn’t sound like much, but it adds up quickly. Good Shop lets you shop at most on-line stores and donates a percentage of those sales back to the school, just be sure to designate AVCS as your beneficiary first. For recycling purposes, we have trash cans set up in the lunch room and on the play ground marked for recycling of cans, plastic, and Capri Sun bags. Please encourage your children to use these bins to help the school and help our planet.
For more information about any of these programs or to volunteer for any of these events, please contact Lisa Kennedy at 247-8412.

Sierra was quick to claim, “We didn’t cry at all!”
“I was never nervous at school,” adds Dillon.
“Did you know anyone on the first day?” I wonder.
“I knew her,” Faith and Sierra point at each other, “and I knew her.”
“What about you Dillon?” I prod.
He flashes a smile and says, "I didn’t know anyone until Mrs. Cooper called them up and told us their names, but after that, I knew EVERYONE.”
I can't help but smile and think to myself, if only in life it was still that easy. If we knew each other’s names we could be considered friends, but that is how it is in kindergarten, I suppose. “Do you have to take naps?” I asked.
“It’s not naps, it's rest!” Dillon reminds me.
“Oh, is that what they call it these days? Well do you like rest time?”
I am surprised with the answers I receive. “I like it!” says Sierra.
“I like it too; it makes my head feel better when I have a headache!" Faith adds.
As I am jotting down their answers, they watch me intently, and I then remember a very novel concept-they can’t read what I am writing. I turn to them and ask, “ Can you read?”
I receive a chorus of “no's” and “not yet’s”
This is such an interesting idea to me because I hardly know anyone who can’t read, and I wonder what they would like to read first once they learn how.
“I would like to read about God first,” says Dillon.
“We are all REALLY wanting to learn to read,” Faith stresses.
We continue to talk and the three are so articulate that I start to forget just how young my young companions are. I nonchalantly ask them what they look forward to in the next thirteen years. I expect answers like "learning cursive writing,” or “sports,” or “going to Evening of Elegance." The answers I receive make me laugh out loud and remind me just how innocent these new kindergartners are.
“Um, my birthday!” Faith says excitedly.
“Going to the zoo!” Sierra answers as she swings upside down from the playground equipment. “I would really like to sleep with the elephants. I love elephants! I collect them, you know."
Unfortunately, before long it is time for me to return to class and bid farewell to my new friends. As I say goodbye, I ask them all for a hug. The girls run over and give me a bear hug while Dillon is not so sure. He soon shyly comes over and gives a quick hug while the girls laugh and Faith giggles, "She got sugar and spice on you!”
My time with the kindergartners is brief, but inexplicably enjoyable, and it takes me back to a time when things were so much simpler. As I walk away from Mrs. Cooper’s class that day, I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to go to a school of kindergarten through twelfth graders. I feel that we can all learn so much from each other, and although I am leaving the school next year, I know that the school will be in extremely capable hands because the next generation of AVC students are a truly remarkable bunch.
